As an experienced interviewer of writers in many formats (as a podcast host, reading series founder, and freelance contributor to literary publications) and a trusted colleague of scholars across disciplines (via her leadership roles in cross-disciplinary programs at Columbia and CUNY), Catherine understands the challenges (and joys) of the written word from a variety of angles. Catherine is ready to help you find the greatest ease possible with your writing and offer compassion along the way, too.
Catherine LaSota is a creativity coach who enjoys supporting people with all forms of nonfiction projects. When you work with Catherine, you get not only technical support but a kind and supportive thought partner who can talk you through the challenges and emotions of writing, too. With her certified coach training, MFAs in multiple creative fields, workshop facilitation training, and work experience across industries, she brings a breadth of knowledge and understanding to the writing and editing space.
An experienced writer and editor
Catherine is the editor of the forthcoming Practicing in Public (OR Books, February 2027), a collection of new conversations on socially engaged art, and her essays and interviews have been published in Literary Hub, Electric Literature, Vice, Catapult, and other places.
She has served as an editorial reader for One Story and A Public Space and as the Development Director for Electric Literature.
She has interviewed hundreds of writers about their creative practice, and her reading series has been covered by The New York Times and named one of the “Coolest Reading Series in NYC” by Time Out New York.
Catherine has authored successful grants funded by governments and nonprofits for literary and academic organizations and scholars.
Here is what working with Catherine 1:1 as an editorial client can look like:
Feedback on grant proposal narrative for clarity: Catherine will read through your narrative and offer written notes and suggestions
Developmental editing for an essay or journal article: talk through your idea with Catherine via phone or Zoom to help define the direction, approach, and purpose for your piece so you can get started writing…or keep writing
A close set of eyes before you submit important work: Catherine can read through finished nonfiction pieces of any genre or length to offer copyediting so you can move forth in confidence with polished writing
Thought partnership: if there is something you want to write about in any nonfiction format (essay, research, memoir) but you don’t know where to begin, talk it through with Catherine to address questions and get yourself unstuck
If any of the above sounds interesting – or if you’d like to discuss support for a nonfiction project in any way not outlined above – Catherine invites you to reach out to her at catherine@catherinelasota.com to discuss the possibilities.
“Thank you so much Catherine! It's been just amazing working with you. Thank you for your generosity and care throughout the entire process!”
-- kind words from a lovely writer
